Aztecs Set to Play UCLA in Season Opener

It’s gameday folks!

San Diego State Men’s Basketball is back. SDSU tips off its season tonight at 7:30pm against a marquee opponent in UCLA. The Bruins are ranked No. 21 in the Preseason Coaches Poll and No. 22 in the Preseason Associated Press Poll.

Though the Aztecs saw their leading scorer Malachi Flynn depart for the NBA (29th pick, First Round, Toronto Raptors), the team returns three of its starters from last season’s 30-2 squad (Matt Mitchell, Jordan Schakel, Nathan Mensah).

Coach Brian Dutcher enters his fourth season as San Diego State’s head coach. Dutcher has said he thinks this should be a very deep Aztecs team. He is also hoping to get contributions from transfer Terrell Gomez (CSU Northridge) and incoming freshmen like guard Lamont Butler (Riverside Poly).

The Bruins will certainly be a tough test for the Aztecs tonight. UCLA struggled during the middle portion of its season last year but finished strong going 9-2 in its final 11 games. The Bruins were sitting in 2nd place in the Pac-12 when the season was cut short due to COVID-19.

State will get a good look at UC Irvine who they are scheduled to play on Friday. The Anteaters will play Pepperdine at 3:30p today in the opener of the four-team event at Viejas Arena.
