Former San Diego State star Stephen Strasburg was named MVP of the 2019 World Series.

The #1 overall pick in the 2009 MLB Draft won both of his World Series starts for the unlikely champion Washington Nationals. The Nats won all six games in which he appeared during their magical playoff run. He finished the playoffs with a 5-0 record, a 1.98 ERA, 47 strikeouts against just 4 walks, and a 0.94 WHIP. It was the Nationals first World Series crown.

Strasburg is the second straight Aztec to win MVP of a major sports championship, joining 2019 NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard. Leonard helped guide the Toronto Raptors to their first NBA title in franchise history.

Strasburg, a San Diego native, is expected to opt out of the 4 years and $100 million remaining on his contract with Washington. The San Diego Padres will likely make a strong push for his services. Strasburg would be an ideal candidate to lead his hometown team into its bright future. Plus, he would look great in brown!

The only question that remains is which former Aztec will be named Super Bowl MVP in February.
