Andy’s Story

At an early age Andy demonstrated a passion for sports by participating in organized youth sports and attending professional sports games of the San Diego teams, the Padres and Chargers. He participated in youth team sports including high school and college basketball and was a multi-year All-Star in Little League Baseball. He played on a traveling competitive baseball team as a teen and quarterback was the position he played for his high school and college football teams. Andy enjoyed and excelled at many individual sports including wake boarding and surfing, standup paddleboard surfing, snowboarding, and golf. His affinity for sports statistics, players and recalling crucial plays was remarkable.

Andy also had a heart for the underprivileged, participating in multiple, church-building, foreign mission trips and volunteered for a Big Brothers program while in high school. Additionally, he volunteered as a high school basketball coach.

On the ride to and from elementary school, Andy tuned into San Diego sports radio programs which stimulated his interest in sports media. His first opportunity to pretend he was a sports broadcaster was at age 11. San Diego hosted the Super Bowl Experience in 1998 and a booth offered patrons a chance to call a football play by speaking into a microphone and taping it, while watching the play projected on a TV screen. Andy was hooked as he rattled off his commentary on a kickoff run back for a touchdown.

Andy recognized the value of education. Out of his love of storytelling, he pursued a communications major in college as well as a business degree. Upon graduating from Pacific Union College in Northern California, Andy returned to San Diego and furthered his education at San Diego State’s Sports Management Masters program. He was able to broadcast high school football through the NFHS program and developed his sports website and podcast, Best Coast Sports Connection. Establishing his Project-858-Media, LLC, allowed Andy to begin to monetize his endeavors.

During college, Andy ran his first marathon and participated in a number of additional marathons and charity runs after graduating. He began training for a second run at the California International Marathon in the summer of 2021 for the race in December. While running, he was tragically hit by a car and passed away at 34 years old on his birthday, September 9, 2021.

The BCSC-Project 858 Media Foundation is established to honor Andy’s passion for sports, education, storytelling, and youth.
