Padres Announce Clevinger Deal, Tommy John

Earlier today, the San Diego Padres announced a two-year contract with starting pitcher Mike Clevinger. Clevinger would have been arbitration eligible this offseason and next, but instead signed the two-year deal worth a guarantee in excess of $11 million.

That’s the good news. The bad news?

In the same statement announcing the two-year contract, the Padres dropped the “Clevinger will also undergo Tommy John surgery on Tuesday” news. Talk about a hot then cold tweet.

Clevinger is expected to miss the entire 2021 season while recovering from the second Tommy John surgery of his career.
