Same Ol' Chargers

I’ve never been prouder to be an ex-Chargers fan. Just when I thought I had tuned them out completely, they gave us another performance that is worthy of some shade tossing.

This past Sunday the Bolts did the unthinkable usual and threw another game away. In this one the Chargers blew a 24-3 third-quarter lead against the Broncos. They committed a costly defensive pass interference penalty on 4th down in the final seconds, setting up a game-winning touchdown on the final play of the game for Denver. Broncos 31, Chargers 30. Shocker.

For the third time in the last four games Los Angeles lost a game in which it was up 17 or more points. There’s a very fitting workplace term for this – standard operation procedure.

And hey, it’s not like we are just now jumping off the Chargers choke-wagon. Those of us here at the BCSC gave up our allegiance to the Bolts the day they announced their decision to move to LA. It was an instant divorce.

The dream for Chargers’ owner Dean Spanos to rid his past in San Diego for greener pastures – from renting space in the Rams’ Taj Mahal to signing a franchise QB that will save the day – continues to be ineffective. While one has to feel for the players that are putting it on the line each week, the evidence continues to support the theory that there is a distinct cultural problem in the Chargers organization. And it has to start from the top.

The Chargers’ loss to the Broncos puts the team at 2-5 and likely on their way to missing the playoffs for the sixth time in seven years. And in Week 9, they face another division matchup against the 4-3 Las Vegas Raiders – the franchise we used to hate with our guts.

Suffice it to say, Raiders, you’ve been replaced.
