Grisham Earns His First Gold Glove

It’s been over a week since that team up in LA won the World Series, so we’re finally ready to talk a little baseball again.

This week, Padres center fielder Trent Grisham earned the NL Gold Glove at his position. This is huge. We all recall Grisham’s playoff error in 2019 that ended his season and tenure in Milwaukee. In his first year with the Padres, he covered the outfield and also added some prowess at the plate. At just 24, he has solidified his spot in center field with the Pads for years to come.

Three more Padres have also been named finalists for NL awards: Manny Machado (MVP), Jake Cronenworth (Rookie of the Year), Jayce Tingler (Manager of the Year). The winners of all those awards will be announced next week.

In another bit of news, it was announced this week that the Padres would not pick up the $3 million team option for 1B/DH Mitch Moreland in 2021. San Diego acquired the veteran via a trade with Boston that sent over prospects Jeisson Rosario and Hudson Potts.

In 20 regular season games this year, Moreland hit .203 with two home runs and eight RBI. Moreland had just eight plate appearances in the team’s six postseason games. The DH was introduced to the National League for the shortened 2020 season, and there is no guarantee MLB will bring it back for 2021 and beyond.

Other notable Padres’ free agents include pitchers Trevor Rosenthal, Kirby Yates, and Garrett Richards, along with utility player Jurickson Profar.
